The Free Institute

The individual experience of space

Pre-master end design | 2018

Re-presentations

In a museum of architecture, the only architecture in its pure definiton that is experienced, is the museum itself. The expositions and presentations within are merely representations of architecture, its space isn’t perceptible at the human scale. Only the building in which these expositions are present, is the actual experience of architecture. Therefore, the base of such a building lies in this experience on the inside. Hence, the Free Institute embodies an abstraction of architecture as pure as possible.

The internal experience of such a building in which ‘architecture’ is experienced, should always overrule the external experience. The interior overrules the exterior, experience overrules beauty, and its architecture, considered in its own property, overrules urbanism.

The architect designs,
the visitor defines

Defining a contemporary objective base for the experience of architecture is merely impossible. The tectonic composition of four walls and a roof has freedom before its rules, the stereotomic character of space based on nature is captured in its freedom. How one considers space and its deformation is a subjective experience, and should be considered as such. The tectonic spaces are the simplistic four walls and a roof or either a shifted cut box. The deformed space is allowed to be either a prehistoric cave, or a futuristic organic building, or anything else. The gradients of such spaces are weaved around a space odyssey monolith containing the archive spaces, in which architecture representations through time are captured within a timeless capsule. Music is experienced by our ears, architecture is by our eyes. And what one's eyes sees, only the experience of the person itself can tell.
